Gateway's March meeting featured a FAA Safety Seminar hosted by Steve Long from the St. Louis FSDO. Steve's talk about proper maintenance procedures and correct log book entries was very informative. As usual, the owner and pilot of an aircraft are ultimately responsible for what the mechanic writes in our log books, thus it is a good idea to read what they wrote and have an idea about what wording and information is necessary and correct. Steve gave several case studies where the pilot was penalized for incorrect and incomplete maintenance entries. Some brush up on FAR part 43 might be in order. Interesting to note; the rules apply to renters as well as owners. We always learn something helpful when Steve stops in and we hope to have him back in the future.

The Gateway annual elections are getting closer. Members Walter Gummersheimer, Rick Albrecht, Doug Geldbach and Libby Younger volunteered for the nominating committee and were approved by the Board members that were present. They will present a slate of candidates at the April meeting and voting will take place during the May gathering. Nominations from the floor will also be accepted at both the April and May meetings. The current officers are Chuck Maggart - president, Brian Brinker - vice president, Tony Petruso - treasurer, and Jean Murry - secretary. The directors whose terms expire in May are Kevin Cullinan, Don Kramme and Steven Pierce.

The first fly-out of the new season has occurred and the troops went to Jeff City on March 16. Alas, the heavy morning fog didn't lift from Smartt Field until too late for us to go, so we made the best of it and washed our Tri-Pacer. Since that was the first really good day this year, we had fun seeing and talking with our airport friends. It has been a long, hard winter and it has been awhile since we have seen them. Many people began flying as the fog and haze slowly lifted.

The next fly-out will be on April 13, to Decatur, IL, with arrival time at 12:30. The bad weather alternate is Kilroy's at Smartt Field and the rain date is April 20. Coordinate with fly-out chairman, Brian Brinker at 314-647-1138 if you would like to join in.

Don Rygelski brought two collectable replica airplanes from the Danbury Mint to show the members at our meeting. They were really superbly made with one being a Wright Flyer (15 inch span) and the other is the Spirit of St. Louis (17 inch span). Don can provide information if anyone is interested in getting a replica for themselves.

Bill Scheve really helped make the 50-50 drawings more exciting (and profitable) with the eight WWII aircraft prints he donated to the chapter. Thank you very much, Bill!

The next convention meeting will be at Chuck & Lana's home on Thursday, April 17, at 7:00 PM. Call 731-0199 for directions and PLEASE be there! Time is short.

When you read this the MPA State Convention will be about nine weeks away, so please fill out the registration form in the MPA NEWS, or download it from the MPA website (www.mopilots.org), and send it in. There should be some forms at the April meeting also. We have some nice activities planned for Friday afternoon and evening if you can slip away a day early. We really look forward to the convention and hope everyone will have a great time in St. Louis.

A member of Gateway's Board of Directors, Bill Darnell, is also a professional photographer. Bill is creating a backdrop featuring the St. Louis skyline for the convention and will be offering professional photographs to all attendees at his cost plus shipping. Can you remember how much trouble it is to get your crowd or chapter together at the convention, and then you have to find a waitress and show her how to operate your camera and hope she gets a good picture? The pictures I get are usually in front of a table full of dirty dishes. Well, here is a chance to get a professional group or individual photo at a very reasonable price. The last I heard, Bill was thinking about having 5x7 pictures for $3 apiece. Thank you, Bill.

William Duke, president of the St. Louis Chapter and owner of Top Gun Unlimited, has donated a new electric powered scooter and accessories that can be folded and carried in your plane. The nifty scooter will be raffled off during the convention and the proceeds used to help defray convention expenses. Thank you very much William.

Another Gateway member, Bill Scheve, is a commercial artist and has volunteered his time to design the convention brochure. We have some talent in this group!

To help with printing costs and convention expenses, we are offering advertising for your company or business in the convention brochure. Full page advertisements are available for $100, half page ads for $50 or one quarter page ads for $25. If you would like to promote your business and help the MPA State Convention, please call me (Chuck Maggart) at 314-731-0199. All material for the brochure must be in Bill Scheve's hands by May 1.

The next Gateway meeting is on April 9, and will feature a very humorous video presented by Dr. Bill Sill, an Aviation Medical Examiner and member of our Board of Directors. The video describes how NOT to take your flight physical. Some of you may have seen it two years ago at the January Super Safety Seminar; however it is well worth seeing again! While some of us can relate to some of the applicant's conditions, it is very funny to see how he presents them to the examiner. During the business portion of the meeting, the new slate of candidates will be presented by the nominating committee. Nominations from the floor (with the nominee's permission) will also be accepted.

To fortify you for the April 9, program at The Columns in St. Charles, the menu will consist of a vegetable relish tray with ranch dip, cream of mushroom soup, pork medallions with gravy, chicken Oscar (crab meat & white sauce), risotto, green beans almandine, rolls and zango (shell filed with cream cheese). Dinner is still $13 per person. The doors open at 6:00 PM, serving begins at 6:30 and the program gets underway at 7:30. Dinner reservations are required and can be made by Monday evening, April 7, by calling Jean Murry at 314-469-3541. Please remember that the permanent reservations list is no longer in effect.
