A big Thank You to all of you that made the January Silent
Auction a huge success! The donors and bidders alike helped us raise a healthy sum to be used for the 2003 state
convention. What is even more impressive is that Gateway was able to do so well with a very light turnout. Even
though plenty of time was available to bid on the items, it seems like the real bidding took place in the last
two or three minutes. It was a fun and productive evening with some very nice items. Thank you again and let
me know if any participants want a tax donation letter. Thanks to Flo Wyatt for chairing the event and permitting
us to use her home to store the items.
At the January meeting, the Jim Byrnes' Memorial Scholarships were initiated. The Jim Byrne's Tribute Committee did a nice job of creating a clear plastic donation box that will be available at every Gateway gathering for folks who wish to contribute to the introductory flight scholarship fund. Gateway Chapter will finance an introductory flight for two deserving young people every year in Jim's name. The chapter treasury will finance the balance of the needed funds. Forms for nominating candidates are kept with the donation box and should be submitted to the Jim Byrne's Tribute Committee consisting of Rick Albrecht, Doug Geldbach, Walt Petring, Linda McCullough and Jan Pocock. The committee did a grand job in creating a lasting memorial to the man who taught so many others to fly.
The Super Safety Seminar on January 25, was a big success thanks to the hard work of the Greater St. Louis Flight Instructors Association and the participating FAA personnel. There were at least twenty-five Gateway members there also. You still have time to fly your three hours with your instructor and obtain your FAA WINGS before the WINGS deadline of March 31. Please send a copy of your request form or WINGS certificate to our WINGS Chairman, Carl Schaffner (1844 Santa Clara St., St. Charles, MO 63303) before the deadline.
Details of the 2003 MPA State Convention are coming together now. An informational flyer is included in the February MPA NEWS and registration forms will be available as soon as more prices are confirmed. We really hope everyone will have a good time and the visiting members will enjoy their stay in St. Louis.
The next convention planning meeting will be at Jean Murry's home on Thursday, February 6, at 7:00. We will be finalizing the prices, developing the registration form and discussing the donations, prizes and finances. If you are an officer, director or volunteer, please be there.
Our fly-out season will resume in March, so please give Brian (fly-out chairman) Brinker a call (314-647-1138) or e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) and let him know where and when you want to go this coming year.
Please remember that everyone must make reservations for the February 12, meeting since there has been a change in procedure. As I mentioned at the January meeting, I have discontinued the Permanent Reservations List because of continuing problems with some members failing to cancel when they did not attend. I apologize to the faithful members who used the system correctly, but the treasury should not continue to buy meals for those that do not call to cancel.
Our February 12, meeting will be a good old fashioned hangar flying session with our guest, Fred Harms. Fred will tell us about his early days of flying helicopters for the U.S. Army and as a civilian pilot. As Fred put it, "flying in the good old days before things got so regulated". Dinner reservations are required and can be made by calling Jean Murry at 314-469-3541.
Please join us at The Columns in St. Charles. The dinner will consist of: tossed salad, cream of tomato soup, London broil, baked cod w/lemon sauce, peas and mushrooms, vegetable rice pilaf, rolls and key lime pie. Dinner is still $13 per person. Social time begins at 6:00 PM, the serving line opens at 6:30 and the program begins at 7:30. Dinner reservations are required and can be easily made by calling Jean Murry at 314-469-3541 by Monday evening, February 10, or better yet, call now - before you put this newsletter down! Please come and bring your friends for the food, fellowship and hangar flying.
