Not too long ago, I was doing a flight review with a friend in his airplane. In the ground training I explained what we would do in the flight portion of the review. He didn't want to do the hood work because he was not instrument rated, and short and soft field landings were things he never used in his flying. After we talked a little more he understood the flight review was a reminder of the emergency check list, special flight operations and that we haven't don't these since the check ride of the last flight review.
Review of the emergency check list from time to time, review special operations in the POH, so if the unthinkable ever happens you will be ready to handle it.
