Greetings pilots and friends! I look forward to serving my next term as your rotating President. Both outgoing
and incoming presidents are really busy at the end of the teaching semester and we hope you'll enjoy this combined
issue. We encourage each of you to enjoy aviation to its fullest, participate in our monthly meetings and keep
up on current training and safety seminars! We had a great meeting in November, with a good turnout, over 20 members
You may recall that the state board of MPA awarded this year's media award to Hank Billings and the Springfield News-Leader. We were honored to have Hank in attendance at the November meeting, as well as Micky and Floyd Pinkston. Micky collected and gathered a beautiful scrapbook with the year's aviation coverage by the News-Leader, and also made the nomination for the award. It was great to have all those involved present at the meeting and we especially enjoyed Hank's presentation about his adventures in aviation in the area. He shared some of the adventures (and misadventures) of pilots flying out of the long gone airports that were located east of the current Battlefield Mall and near Phelps Grove Park. Apparently a Stearman once took off from the football field at Briggs Stadium at SMSU (now Plaster Stadium). Wow!
Hank's presentation also made me realize that much of what I know about early aviation history in the Ozarks has been accumulated over the years from Hank's newspaper columns. Several of us visited with Hank after the meeting and discovered many old friends in common, such as renowned photographer, Betty Love. Thanks to Hank, and we hope to see him again soon.
Unless otherwise announced, our regular chapter meetings are the third Tuesday at the Café SGF. Please mark your calendars now for our meetings. We hope to see you on December 14 for our annual Christmas Party (yes, that's the SECOND Tuesday, so it wouldn't be so close to the holiday). :
E-mail me if you have any suggestions or ideas for upcoming events! email@example.com
See you all soon!
